MATERIALS AND METHODS:
A special experimental design was developed to test the impermeability to gas at the Implant-abutment-connection of dental implants. 5 test specimens were prepared for each implant system. Each specimen simulated an implantsupported molar crown in the upper jaw. The examination of the gas impermeability was made using a specially developed test setup, which is designed to simulate the clinical situation. For this purpose, a vacuum was applied in Implant interior. The measurement was made in three phases.
CONCLUSION:
Apart from one test specimen, the implant system from implantswiss (Æ 3.70mm x 10mm) tested here shows very good tightness both unloaded and under simulated masticatory loads. The leakages of 4 test specimens are below 0.1 mbar both unloaded and loaded. These values correspond to a good conical implant-abutment-connection, particularly with reference to the implant diameter of 3.7 mm. Apart from a few exceptions, flat-to-flat connections usually show a leakage of 0.1 - 5mbar in the unloaded state. If flat-to-flat connections are loaded according to the described protocol, leakages of up to several hundred-mbar results.
