Effect Of Hypercholesterolemia and Anticoagulant Drug Use On The Wettability Of Titanium Surfaces With Different Surface Properties: Animal Experiment

Çağlar, D., Güven, O., & Fıratlı, E. (2024). Effect Of Hypercholesterolemia and Anticoagulant Drug Use On The Wettability Of Titanium Surfaces With Different Surface Properties: Animal Experiment. Istanbul Kent University Journal of Health Sciences, 3(1), 18-29.

Abstract:

The ability of blood to wet the implant surface depends on the surface properties of blood and titanium. Statin and anticoagulant drug use and lipid levels in the blood can affect blood viscosity. This may negatively affect wettability. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of warfarin and statin on the wettability of titanium discs with different surface properties. 9 New Zealand rabbits were introduced into the healthy period, hypercholesterolemic period, statin use period and anticoagulant use period. At the end of each period, blood was taken from the animals and dropped onto machine-surfaced, RBM (Resorbable blast media) and SLA (Sand blasted – large grit – acid etched) surfaced titanium discs. The contact angle between the titanium disc surface and the blood drop was measured and compared between groups. In the end of the hypercholesterolemic period, the mean contact angle of the SLA group (92.69° ± 9.50°) is lower than the Machine (118.41° ± 9.14°) and RBM (110.00° ± 6.18°) groups (p <0.001). In the end of the statin period, the mean contact angle of the SLA group (82.59° ± 7.84°) is lower than the Machine (99.35° ± 9.78°) and RBM (97.85° ± 11.24°) groups (p <0.001). In the end the anticoagulant period, the mean contact angle of the SLA group (81.84° ± 14.18°) is lower than that of the RBM (106.38° ± 5.65°) and Machine (108.35° ± 13.43°) groups (p <0.001). On the period basis, the average contact angle of the machine surface group in the healthy (90.91° ± 14.18°) and statin period (99.35° ± 9.78°) is lower than the hypercholesterolemic period (118.41° ± 9.14°) (p <0.05). Titanium discs with SLA surfaces are significantly more hydrophilic than those with RBM and Machine surfaces in all periods. The highest contact angle averages were seen in the hypercholesterolemic period, and contact angle averages decreased in statin users. The use of SLA surface implants in hypercholesterolemia patients receiving statin therapy will increase the chance of osseointegration, as it has high wettability. Conducting this study using titanium discs with different surface properties will help finding the most suitable surface feature for hypercholesterolemic patients.
